Minor surgery

We have experience in performing minor surgical procedures in our practice. First we will assess and discuss the problem needing surgery. Then we decide whether the operation is possible and schedule the procedure. The procedure will take place in the practice using local anaesthesia and often does not take longer than 30 minutes. Here is a list of procedures performed by us:

  • Treatment of an ingrown toenail
  • Removal of birthmarks
  • Removal of sebaceous cysts and lipomas
  • Removal/freezing of warts
  • Removal/freezing of fibromas and other skin abnormalities
  • Cutting of a short tongue web

Anti-inflammatory injections

Anti-inflammatory injections can be quick and effective for many problems. For instance it can help to relieve bursitis in the hip or shoulder, but can also be very effective against complaints of wear and tear of certain joints. We have experience giving these injections. During a consultation we will decide whether an injection can be helpful, after which we will order the anti-inflammatory medicine and schedule an appointment to give the injection.

24-hour blood pressure measurement

Your blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day and night. At a consultation with the doctor your blood pressure can be higher than at home. This is often due to the extra tension surrounding the visit to the doctor. A 24-hour blood pressure measurement may be a more accurate way to measure the blood pressure. By measuring your blood pressure for a longer period the development of your blood pressure is well mapped. You will get a blood pressure cuff around your arm that is connected to a box that is attached to your belt or hung like a bag around your neck. The device ensures that every fifteen minutes during the day and every half hour at night your blood pressure is measured and stored. The device also measures your heart rate. The next day you return the meter to the assistant. You will receive a new appointment to discuss the results with your doctor.

ECG

An electrocardiogram (also known as an ECG or EKG) is the recording of the electro activity of the heart muscle. The heart is a hollow muscle, which contracts under the influence of very small electric stimuli. These electrical impulses are measured and recorded by the ECG machine. Interpretation of an ECG provides information of the working and condition of the heart muscle.
An ECG will sometimes be made by appointment by the assistant, but sometimes also directly as your doctor thinks it is required.

Lungfunction test (Spirometry)

Spirometry is a simple, painless, and reliable technique for measuring the lung function or lung capacity, and then to graphically display the outcome. Spirometry is suitable to make the diagnosis in patients with shortness of breath symptoms and for monitoring patients with an already known lung disease. Spirometry makes it possible to make a distinction between asthma and COPD (formerly known as chronic bronchitis or emphysema), and to determine the severity of these lung diseases as well.
At Huisartsen Ganzenhoef the spirometry is performed by our nurse practitioner Guylene Tchinda and reviewed in consultation with the doctor. Based on the results an individual treatment plan is set up. The major advantage of this approach is that referral to the hospital is prevented or can take place very accurately.
More information on the lung function tests can be found (in Dutch) at: www.thuisarts.nl/copd/ik-krijg-longfunctietest-om-copd-vast-te-stellen and www.thuisarts.nl/astma/ik-word-onderzocht-voor-astma

Insertion and removal of an intrauterine device

An IUD is a contraceptive device that is inserted in the uterus. With this device, pregnancy can be prevented for 5 or 10 years, depending on the sort of IUD. IUD’s can be inserted and removed at our practice. First, you will have a 15-minute consultation in which the GP will explain the procedure. After that, an appointment for 30 minutes will be scheduled in which the intrauterine device will be placed and when required a test for chlamydia will be done.
Removing an IUD can be done in a regular 15-minute appointment.

Implantation and removal of a contraceptive implant

The contraceptive implant is a contraceptive device that can remain in place for 3 years. It is a small flexible tube about 4cm long and 2mm wide that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm where it releases a hormone and thus prevents pregnancy. The contraceptive implant can be placed under local anaesthesia at our practice. First, you will have a 15-minute consultation in which the GP will explain the procedure and then the contraceptive implantation will be ordered. After that, an appointment for 30 minutes will be scheduled for the placement of the contraceptive implant. The removal of the implant also takes place under local anaesthesia and this procedure will take 30 minutes.

Diabetes Mellitus

With us your diabetes is well controlled in coördination with the healthcare group Medische Zorggroep Zuid-Oost (MedZZO). Patients with diabetes have a higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease. This requires a personal approach and subsequently will require a number of examinations. For patients with diabetes it is important to be seen regularly. This means that you are being monitored in our practice every three months by our nurse practitioner (POH) and once a year by the GP. We also coördinate all other care needed in diabetes, such as eye, foot and blood checks. All this leads to well-organized and high-quality care. For more information about the disease (in Dutch): www.thuisarts.nl/diabetes-mellitus.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the airways, which is accompanied by a constriction and an increased irritability of the respiratory tract. This can cause shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing and is often the result of an allergy. Also without allergy asthma can occur. It can begin at a young age. Not everyone who is or was short of breath or has a chronic cough has asthma. A characteristic of asthma is that periods with and without symptoms alternate with each other.
To determine whether you have asthma, your doctor can ask the nurse practitioner to do a lung function test.

COPD (Emphysema)

With COPD narrowing of the small airways can cause shortness of breath symptoms. COPD usually occurs after the age of 40 year with people who have smoked or have been in contact with certain substances for a long period of time. People with COPD experience symptoms continuously. The symptoms can be improved or stabilized by certain inhalation medicine or (temporarily) increase by a respiratory infection.
To determine if you have COPD, your doctor can ask the nurse practitioner to do a lung function test.

Cardiovascular disease

At Huisartsen Ganzenhoef we have a care program for people with cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease). This means that you are checked periodically in our practice by our nurse practitioner (POH). Here problems are discussed that are characteristic for cardiovascular disease. Further more your blood pressure is monitored, your weight and certain blood levels are checked and your medication is reviewed. The aim is to give you as much as possible guidance with your cardiovascular disease and to minimize the chance of recurrence.

Smoking cessation

Quitting smoking is difficult. Therefore it is important that you prepare it well. Choose a convenient time when you do not have too much on your mind and when there’s plenty of distraction. In doubt if you can quit smoking? Or you would like assistance in quitting smoking? Make an appointment at our clinic. Together with our nurse practitioner (POH), we can help you quit smoking, possibly with the aid of medication or nicotine replacement. This will be reimbursed by all insuring companies.

Treatment of psychological problems

Psychological symptoms and problems are common in everyday life and can be a great burden for anyone. In our practice a special therapist is working for patients with mental problems. Via your GP, you can get an appointment at the mental health nurse (POH GGZ) to get more clarification on your psychological problems or for further counseling and treatment for your mental problems. Our psychosocial therapist is accessible and readily available and is therefore a welcome addition to our practice.
You can find a selftest for depression on MINDblue.nl of kleurjeleven.nl.

Krachtige Basiszorg

Huisartsen Ganzenhoef participates in the project Krachtige basiszorg (direct translation: Powerfull basic care) project in 2019. The project takes 2 years and we do this at the same time as 3 other general practices in Amsterdam. The project involves an integrated approach for residents in our neighborhood who are confronted with high health risks and who have problems in multiple areas of life.
For good care provision, it is important for the doctor to get to know you well. By participating in the project we have the opportunity to give more time to your specific request for help. The general practitioners and our Social Support Practitioner, Leanne Beukers, work together in a neighborhood-oriented manner with other care providers and prevention workers, and with doctors from the hospital. In the meantime, we exchange information to learn from each other and to share experiences. Together with you we look and consult, and take a joint decision as to which care and attention is best for your situation.
Together with the Social Support Practitioner you map out your situation. If you would like your caregiver to be present, this is no problem. What is going well, what are you satisfied with and in which areas can you use support?
Good cooperation with all welfare and care organizations in the neighborhood is one of the characteristics of Krachtige Basiszorg. We also expect that in this way you and your doctor know each other better and you will be helped better.

Elderly care for vulnerable elderly

The risk of serious health problems rises sharply, especially for older people over 75 years of age. At Huisartsen Ganzenhoef we have a care program for vulnerable elderly. The aim of this care program is to map all patients aged 75 years and over and to provide care where necessary.
The aim is to keep the quality of life at the highest possible level and to allow vulnerable elderly people to live as long as possible in an environment that suits them best. This is often at home with the support of various care providers.

Health check & lifestyle advice

It is good every now and then to stop and reflect on your health. However, it isn’t immediately necessary to go to the doctor for this. To help you in making your decision whether it is useful to go to the doctor or not, we can sketch some situations which would require an appointment for consultation:

  • You have a high-risk for cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure or diabetes. You can test these yourself at testuwrisico.nl.
  • In your family, there is an occurrence of hereditary illnesses, for example hereditary tumours or diabetes.
  • You have the feeling that you live an unhealthy life and would like to actively improve your lifestyle. One can check the healthiness of their lifestyle at persoonlijkegezondheidscheck.nl.
  • You would like to quit smoking.

In these, or similar cases it is wise to make an appointment for consultation so we can help you to improve your health.
